I started to see warning signs that things were far from perfect. On one camping trip, my boyfriend fell asleep on the picnic table and woke up sick the next morning.
He explained that he liked a bit of whiskey when he was in the great outdoors but it must not have set right with his stomach. One night he came to my house, drunk and very upset, after working his shift in the hospital emergency room.
He explained that one of his young patients had died. A few weeks later, we were talking on the phone and he told me he had overdone it at a hospital fund-raiser the night before.
In the middle of examining a patient, he had to go into the bathroom and throw up. Not too much later, we went to the mountains to visit some of his college friends. Everyone else was drinking. I noticed my boyfriend was having quite a few beers. When his friends started passing marijuana around, my boyfriend joined them. I was so upset that I had to leave the cabin. Under a sky full of stars, I got down on my knees on the mountainside and said a prayer.
I would say this same prayer many times over the next year. Please make everything okay. I kept going to Al-Anon meetings and crying. I was powerless to change that. One beautiful summer morning, we went canoeing with his brother. They started drinking and one of them spilled some beer in the canoe. As we paddled, it sloshed from front to back. The smell of warm beer became overwhelming. At that moment, God answered my prayer. The price is too high.
I deserve so much more than this. But God had other plans. Through Al-Anon, my self-esteem grew to a level where I realized that God wants me in a mutually loving and respectful relationship, and active alcoholism is not a part of that picture.
I was able to end the relationship, even though I loved him very much. With the help of Al-Anon and my Higher Power, I have grown into the strong, capable and confident woman I always wanted to be. Albert Einstein Click to tweet.
